Book Lists

At some point in college, I realized that I wanted to read a lot of books so I started asking people about the books that they had read.  Eventually, I started writing them down in my first reading list which spawned others.

Methodically reading through a list can get dull.  I tried to tackle the Modern Library's 100 Greatest Novels a few years back.  It was fun for a couple of years.  I discovered a couple of authors that I really enjoy reading, and I read some good books that I probably would have never opened.  But somewhere around the 70s, I lost my head of steam.  I started to see the philosophical attitudes of the people who make those lists, and how similar the themes, subject matter, and even characters were during the 'modern' period.  I'm not sure I can bring myself to surmount the pile of Henry James, D.H. Lawrence and E.M. Forster that is left to read.

I choose to use my personal book list differently.  I don't go through it chronologically or in any type of systemic fashion.  When I am ready for a new book, then I choose one from the list that I feel like reading.  Sometimes I will deliberately focus for a bit on history or theology for a few months, but then I will usually jump back to something relaxing to read.  In all it keeps my reading somewhat focused by the people I've met, the classes I've taken, and other books.  But at the end of the day, I get to read what I want to read.

I've copied a partial list below!
